Hounslow’s Sikh community in collaboration with Hounslow Council planted an orchard in Lampton Park on Saturday 8th February to commemorate the 550th birth-anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Native fruits trees were planted by volunteers from Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara, and local community collective Heston Action Group. A special plaque was unveiled naming the orchard the Guru Nanak Orchard.
The event was organised with an aim for the wider community to learn more about the local vegetation and environment, whilst spreading Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s message referring to nature as a manifestation of God.
Planned in conjunction with Lampton 360, a variety of five native fruit trees were planted, including, Bramley, Cox’s Orange Pippin and Elstar Apples, as well as Beurre and Conference Pear.
Supinder Gill, Volunteer at Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara said:
“It was particularly great to see children taking an active interest. Hounslow 360 provided guidance and assistance.
“At the end of the event we all went home, happy and dirty. So, when you are next in Lampton Park, walk over and see our orchard, water the trees, talk to them.
“Today our planet – the great Mother Earth, is under threat from climate change. Trees play a pivotal role in the fight against climate change, cleaning our air, storing carbon and producing oxygen, and that’s why we need them like never before.’
